Guide

The only qualification framework that matters is written down

BANT, MEDDIC, CHAMP. The framework you pick matters far less than whether two of your reps would grade the same lead the same way.

The short answer

The qualification framework you choose matters far less than whether two of your reps would grade the same lead identically. Convert BANT or MEDDIC into evidence based criteria specific to your deals, then run the two rep exercise on ten recent leads and rewrite every line they disagree on.

The real problem with BANT and MEDDIC

Neither framework is wrong. Both are generic by design, which means every rep interprets them differently. One rep marks budget confirmed because a prospect said pricing looks reasonable. Another needs a signed number. Same framework, two different pipelines, and a forecast nobody trusts.

Qualification improves when the criteria become specific to your business, not when you switch acronyms.

Write criteria a new hire could apply

For each criterion, state the evidence required, not the concept. Not "authority confirmed" but "we have spoken with the person who signs, or with someone who has named them and described the approval process." Evidence based criteria survive rep turnover. Concept based criteria do not.

Test it with the two rep exercise

Take ten recent leads. Have two reps grade each one independently against your written criteria. Anywhere they disagree, the criteria are ambiguous. Rewrite that line and repeat until agreement is near total. This exercise takes an afternoon and is the single highest leverage qualification work most teams never do.

Then measure it

Once qualified means one thing, MQL to SQL conversion becomes a real signal rather than noise, and you can finally tell a lead quality problem from a follow up problem. That is covered in improving MQL to SQL conversion, and the reporting setup in GTM analytics and reporting.

Questions

Is BANT still relevant?+

BANT is a reasonable starting shape, but on its own it is too generic for consistent grading. Adapt it into evidence based criteria specific to your deals, then test that two reps grade identically.

What makes a lead sales qualified?+

A lead is sales qualified when it meets your written, evidence based criteria for fit, problem, authority, and timing. The definition must be specific enough that two reps reach the same verdict independently.
